In the field of road engineering, road marking is an intuitive and important sign, not only to provide travellers with clear guidance, but also play a role in warning safety. Therefore, after the completion of road construction, marking becomes a crucial process. Different road conditions and owners’ needs require the use of different types of road marking paint. This article will introduce several common road marking paint.
1, Thermomelt road marking paint
Thermomelt road marking paint is widely used in cities, secondary and above roads and motorways because of its good night reflective performance, long service life and excellent weather resistance. During the construction process, the paint is melted by heating and then applied on the road surface by road marking machine. The paint is mixed with reflective glass beads, and the reflective glass beads are sprinkled on the surface during the construction of marking to enhance its reflective effect at night. Thermomelt road marking paint has the following characteristics:
- Good bonding ability: it has good bonding ability to asphalt pavement or cement pavement and is not easy to peel off.
- Weathering and abrasion resistance: withstand long-term rain and sunshine and large temperature changes, not easy to discolour, clear markings are not easy to crack and wear.
- Reflective performance: can maintain good reflectivity, reflective effect will not be significantly reduced.
- Construction performance: fast drying, smooth surface, strong adhesion to glass beads, easy to control the thickness of marking and maintain uniformity.
2, Normal temperature marking paint
Normal temperature road marking paint is mainly produced with acrylic resin as the base material, which has the features of fast drying, easy construction and good weather resistance. It is widely used in city roads, national and provincial highways, airports, wharves, car parks, underground garages, etc. It is especially suitable for re-lining of old lines. Normal temperature road marking paint has the following advantages:
- Excellent adhesion: strong adhesion with road substrate, not easy to fall off.
- Fast construction speed: low construction cost per unit area, convenient operation and strong adaptability.
- Good weather resistance: no precipitation in long-term storage, fast drying time after construction is completed.
3, Two-component road marking paint
Two-component road marking paint refers to the reactive two-component road marking paint, which is packed separately by A and B components, and the curing agent is added on the spot during the construction, and then mixed and sprayed by the special two-component road marking machine. Two-component road marking paint has the following characteristics:
- Good durability: A, B two components in the film will be a chemical reaction, marking the line of good adhesion, denser film, high mechanical strength.
- No cracks: good resistance to temperature changes, not easy to crack at low temperatures, not easy to deform at high temperatures.
- High reflective brightness: not only can it obtain high initial retro-reflective coefficient, but also the retro-reflective coefficient decreases slowly with time in use.
- Good recoating performance: relative to the hot melt scraping thinner coating, two-component road marking in the recoating construction is easier to carry out.
4, Water-based road marking paint
Water-based road marking paint is a high solid, room temperature curing products, with strong adhesion, high hardness, tough paint film and other characteristics. It is mainly used in industrial ground facilities to protect ground materials from corrosion. Water-based road marking paint has the following advantages:
- Strong corrosion resistance: including resistance to chemical atmosphere, water, acid, alkali, salt, other solvents and other corrosion.
- Convenient construction: according to the needs of users can be made of different thickness of paint, construction is convenient, adaptable.
- Wide range of application: not only applicable to road marking, but also can be used for car parking space demarcation, factory demarcation and so on.
When choosing road marking paint, the following factors should be considered:
- Road type and traffic flow: Highways and busy city roads are suitable for hot melt road marking paint and two-component road marking paint because they have good durability and reflective properties. Normal temperature marking paints and water-based marking paints, on the other hand, are more suitable for roads and factories with low traffic flow.
- Climatic conditions: In areas with large temperature differences, good weather resistant paints should be chosen, such as hot melt road marking paint and two-component road marking paint.
- Construction conditions: room temperature road marking paint and water-based road marking paint require lower construction conditions and are suitable for quick construction and maintenance.
- Cost budget: according to the cost budget of the project, choose the cost-effective coating.
To sum up, the selection of road marking paint should be based on the type of road, traffic flow, climatic conditions, construction conditions and cost budget and other factors. Only by choosing the right paint can we ensure the clarity, durability and safety of road marking paint and provide road users with a safe and convenient travelling environment.
